"Not a model" : Selena on body shaming

Internet is a whole maze-based platform, you never know what you'll get as a consequence of your action. This line mostly goes with all prominent figures and celebrities.

Trolling and negative comments are common things on social media nowadays. Celebrities get everything hate, support and criticism for their actions. One such name in this list of criticism and judgement is Selena Gomez. People on social media keep bashing her for the way she looks in the form of body shaming. It's not new to Selena and now she knows how to deal with it in an adequate and kind manner.

Few days back, Selena came live on her Tiktok account to make things clear and respond to the hate she is getting on her sudden weight gain due to lupus. In the past also, Selena has been very open about her struggles with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, and internal organs. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2015. She underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 due to complications from lupus. She expressed her whole heart out during the live and said, “I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through, and no one knows the real story. I just want people to know that you’re beautiful, and you’re wonderful. Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t, but I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.” She emphasized herself by saying that "I am not a model, never will be."

Body shaming and weight trolling can be extremely damaging to a person's mental health and can contribute to eating disorders, anxiety, and depression.

We should strive to promote body positivity and acceptance, and focus on health and well-being rather than societal standards of beauty. Celebrities, like Selena Gomez, are also human beings who deserve respect and kindness, regardless of their appearance.

Toxic beauty standards : Plastic in use

Few months back, a random girl on social media was bashed for looking similar to Kylie Jenner. Her response to the statement was actually smart and brutal, she quoted, " I was born with this face...Kylie Jenner bought it.!" Fair enough! I guess. The question is that, why Kylie went through such procedures? Is it the insecurity thing or the urge to look fabulous by setting some of the unnecessary beauty standards. Not only Kylie but her whole Kardashian family is influenced by such type of lifestyle.

These beauty standards are characterized by a focus on curvy, hourglass figures, full lips, chiseled cheekbones, and flawless skin. It is not wrong to go through such surgeries and look better. Everybody has their own life and decisions but as a prominent figure you need to tell every detailed pros and cons about your decisions and it's outcome.

People in western culture see plastic surgery as a way to enhance their natural beauty and boost their self-confidence, others argue that the pursuit of "perfection" through artificial means can be harmful to both individuals and society as a whole.

In recent years, the Kardashian beauty standards have been subject to criticism for promoting unrealistic beauty ideals and perpetuating harmful beauty standards. Many argue that these standards place undue pressure on women to conform to a specific, often unattainable, beauty standard. Some people become addicted to plastic surgery and continue to seek out more procedures to achieve their desired appearance, which can be dangerous and costly. All surgeries come with potential risks and complications, such as infections, bleeding, anesthesia reactions, and scarring. Plastic surgery can result in serious complications such as nerve damage, blood clots, and even death.

Other countries also have their own beauty evaluating benchmark. Talking about Korea, Fair skin is highly valued in South Korea and is often seen as a symbol of beauty, purity, and wealth. Large, round eyes with double eyelids are seen as attractive in Korean beauty standards.

Fair skin is often seen as a beauty ideal in India, with many beauty products marketed towards lightening the skin. However, there is also a growing movement towards celebrating and embracing darker skin tones.

The pressure to conform to these standards has been criticized for perpetuating unrealistic beauty ideals and contributing to body image issues among women.

The peer pressure to look good and meet such standards can lead to a variety of negative consequences, including low self-esteem, body image issues, and even mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

To overcome this pressure, it's important to focus on self-acceptance and self-love, rather than trying to meet the unrealistic beauty standards set by others. Remember, you are beautiful just the way you are. Don't let peer pressure make you feel otherwise.

Fast fashion : An emerging business trend

Few days back, Shein, an online fast-fashion retailer, gained a lot of headlines as they were accused of exploiting the employees in poor working conditions and low wages. There have been reports of workers being paid very low wages, working long hours in unsafe and unhealthy conditions, and being subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

Shein has responded to these allegations, stating that they take labor standards and working conditions very seriously and have policies in place to ensure that their suppliers meet certain standards. However, many people, including labor advocates, believe that Shein needs to do more to address these issues and ensure that the workers in their supply chain are treated fairly and ethically.

After this incident many fast fashion based companies came into action and promoted their brand name for every good cause. Following the above mentioned case, another famous brand named Forever 21 faced a major bankruptcy.  In recent years, the company has experienced a significant decline and has faced a number of challenges that have led to its failure. However, failure of Forever 21 serves as a cautionary lesson about the importance of adaptability and staying attuned to the changing needs and preferences of consumers in the ever-evolving retail landscape.

Going forward into the topic let us discuss more about the term, "FAST FASHION."

Fast fashion refers to the practice of quickly producing and selling low-cost clothing items in order to meet the demands of rapidly changing fashion trends. Such brands often prioritize low production costs and quick turnaround times over ethical and sustainable practices.

This approach has been criticized for its negative impact on the environment, as well as the labor conditions of workers in countries where much of the fast fashion production takes place. The production of fast fashion often involves the use of cheap and low-quality materials, which can lead to increased waste and pollution, and the production process may involve the use of harmful  chemicals and dyes. Additionally, workers in countries where much of the production occurs often work long hours in poor conditions for low pay as discussed earlier.

We cannot deny the fact that fast fashion has made trendy clothing more affordable and accessible to a wider range of people. It has allowed consumers to keep up with the latest fashion trends without breaking the bank and also helped with creating various employment opportunities. But on the other hand, they have a negative impact on environment and labour treatment.

Therefore, while fast fashion may have some positive aspects, it is important to consider its overall impact on the environment, society, and economy. It is important for consumers to educate themselves on the impacts of the fast fashion industry and make informed choices about their purchasing habits.

Men in skirts : Gender fluid fashion 2023

If I particularly ask you, what do you think about unisex fashion? Your answer would totally depend on the society where you've been brought up. But you can contradict the statement as people have different mentality and are now opening for a change which is a good thing.

As for the topic in trend, Unisex fashion refers to clothing and accessories that are designed to be worn by people of any gender either a men or women. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards gender-neutral clothing and a blurring of traditional gender lines in fashion which also brings limelight to LGBTQ community.

It is also becoming more common for fashion brands to create gender-neutral collections that are specifically designed to be worn by anyone.

The reason why the Unisex fashion is mentioned is due to the fact that men are into skirts these days. The recent talk in the gender neutral clothing is "skirts for men". Though last year it gained people's attention when Brad Pitt wore a skirt kinda kilt to the premier of his film "Bullet Train" which was released in July 2022. But as of the continuity of the saga, men skirts have gained the hype in the fashion industry in 2023.

Men in skirts is not a new topic, history itself gave a lot of clothing evidences from the past. Men in Ancient Egypt wore a skirt-like garment called a shendyt (made from linen and wrapped around the waist, often reaching down to the ankles).

The hakama is a traditional Japanese garment that resembles a skirt or wide-legged pants. It was historically worn by samurai and other members of the aristocracy.

Many other celebs like Harry Styles also joined the club by promoting unisex fashion. Styles has been vocal about his belief that clothing doesn't have to be restricted to one gender. He has been seen wearing a variety of clothing styles traditionally associated with both men and women, such as flowy blouses, ruffled shirts, wide-leg pants, and statement accessories. His bold and unique fashion choices have inspired many people around the world to express themselves through their own personal style, regardless of gender stereotypes or societal expectations.

Well, what do you think about this genderless fashion statement ? Would you prefer it in your style schedule ?
